Give Your Pumpkins a Second Life

When Halloween is over, don't send your pumpkins to the landfill. If you’re in the curbside composting program, small pumpkins can go right in your bin. Larger ones can sit on top, and Black Earth Compost will take them away on your pickup date. No painted or glittered pumpkins and be sure to remove any candles.

PLEASE NOTE: The Barrington Farm School Community compost crew is NOT accepting pumpkins and goards in their compost and food scrap drop-off locations (in Peck Center parking lot behind the library, Kent Street, and the Farm School). Most pumpkins are not regulated as food so they contain lots of harmful pesticides and fungicides, and they do not want those things in their plants nor crops.

Refer a Friend, You Each Earn $20!

Already participating in the curbside composting program? Word of mouth is the most common way folks hear about the curbside compost program, so they truly could not do this without you. Refer a friend or neighbor! Share your personal referral code, and when they sign up, you'll both receive a $20 account credit. It's a great way to save while helping Barrington reduce food waste and support local sustainability efforts.

The next 25 people who sign up will receive a free countertop food scrap collection bin and a roll of 20 compostable liners.

Learn more and enroll today at https://blackearthcompost.com/barrington/

The Town of Barrington, the Eastern Rhode Island Conservation District/ERICD, and 11th Hour Racing sponsor the composting initiative as part of ongoing efforts to reduce food waste, lower disposal costs, and support local sustainability goals.

Stay Informed and Involved in Barrington’s Annual Budget Process

The Financial Town Referendum (FTR) is but one way that Barrington residents can participate in the budget process. Each fall, the process begins with the work of the Budget Forecasting Committee, which flows into the school and municipal administrators’ development of budgets in consultation with their respective department heads and school principals. Administrators bring the budgets to their elected bodies (Town Council and School Committee) for further discussions (be on the lookout for dates for these meetings in early 2027).

In early March, the school and municipal budget requests are put before the Committee on Appropriations (COA) to be reviewed, questioned, discussed (in conjunction with Barrington residents) before a proposed COA budget is presented at an initial budget hearing (in early April) and revised based on public feedback. The revised proposed COA budget is then presented at the second budget hearing.

Amendments to the proposed COA budget can be filed for consideration on the ballot of the Financial Town Referendum. Stay engaged throughout the process so that you can have an impact on the town budget and so that you can be an informed voter at the FTR.
